There can be no doubt that the men embarking for Java, Philippine Islands, Penang, Saigon and Singapore are free emigrants, so much so that they are not bound to any contracts.
It has not been possible to obtain the official return of Emigrants embarked during the year 1861, the above figures 7,718 being taken from Williams' Commercial Guide, 5th edition.
The returns for the years 1856-59 are from the Tables published with the report of the Macao Superintendent of Emigration, dated 31st July, 1861. The totals for 1860, 1862-67 have been obtained from the office of the Macao Harbour Master.
